Did you have issues with squash bugs, squash vine bores, cucumber beetles or root nematodes this past spring? Taking a page from Sun Tzu’s Art of War, and attack them when they are at their weakest which would be in dormancy. The weapon to use against these destructive pests are beneficial nematodes. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic, subterranean worms that act as parasites on non-beneficial pests. Since the larva of the bad insects are in a dormant state in the soil, they are easy prey for the nematodes.
Nematodes are mixed with water and poured through a provided sieve. For garden applications it is recommended to use a clean watering can, although you can use pump-up or hose-end sprayers. Apply the nematodes on the damp ground as the sun is setting. Water the area thoroughly after application. Wells Brothers sells beneficial nematodes in two sizes. The medium size will cover a quarter of an acre and the large size will cover half an acre. As always, read and follow the label directions.
One of the most annoying critters we fight in the cool weather is the Cabbage Looper. A green inch worm looking bug that loves leafy plants. They can be very damaging but they are also easy to control. You need to inspect the garden to identify the problem before they get out of hand. The farmers call this crop inspection, scouting. My weapon of choice is Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis). Bt is available in both liquid and powder called Dipel Dust. The liquid should be used with a sticking agent like liquid molasses. The only issue with liquid molasses is that I have had it gum up the sprayer. You don’t have to deal with that if you use the powder but it is very hard to get it to stick to the bottom of a leaf.
All these events happened in September. Some long ago and some in recent history.
September 1, 1985 – Dr. Robert Ballard found the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland.
September 2, 1864 – General William T. Sherman and his army, during the American Civil War, captured Atlanta. “Atlanta is ours, and fairly won,” was telegraphed to President Lincoln.
September 4, 1886 – The last major U.S.-Indian war came to an end with the capture of Geronimo by General Nelson A. Miles. Geronimo died of natural causes at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1909.
September 5, 1975 – President Gerald Ford survives the first of two September assassination attempts in California. Ford was not harmed in either incident.
September 11, 2001 – The worst terrorist attack in U.S. history occurred as four hijacked passenger jets were crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons. Four teams of Mideast terrorists, operating inside the U.S., boarded morning flights then forcibly commandeered the air crafts.
American Airlines Flight 11 carrying 92 people and United Airlines Flight 175 carrying 65 people. Both had departed Boston for Los Angeles. Both jets were diverted by the hijackers to New York City where they were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center. The impact and subsequent fire caused both 110-story towers to collapse, killing 2,752 persons including hundreds of rescue workers and employees in the towers.
American Airlines Flight 77, with 64 people on board departed Dulles (Virginia) for Los Angeles. Flight 77 was diverted to Washington, D.C. and flown into the Pentagon, killing everyone on board and 125 military personnel inside.
Also hijacked was United Airlines Flight 93, with 44 people on board departed from Newark for San Francisco. Flight 93 was diverted toward Washington and crashed in a field in Pennsylvania during an attempted takeover by the passengers.
