January 1, 1863, The Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the states rebelling against the Union.
January 1, 1892, Ellis Island opened. Until its closing in 1954, over 20 million people legally arrived in America.
January 3, 1959, Alaska was admitted as the 49th U.S. state.
January 4, 1790, President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address.
January 8, 1815, The Battle of New Orleans occurred as General Andrew Jackson and American troops inflicted over 2,000 casualties against the British.
January 8, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson started America’s War on Poverty. Not sure if we won this one or not. https://www.britannica.com/topic/War-on-Poverty
January 10, 1878, the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote was introduced in Congress.
January 12, 1999, President Bill Clinton sent a check for $850,000 to Paula Jones officially ending the sexual harassment legal case. What a trendsetter.
January 28, 1986, The U.S. Space Shuttle Challenger exploded.
