I get asked from time to time about high nitrogen organic garden fertilizer. To start with, all plants need nitrogen but its main propose is for plant growth. Using a high nitrogen fertilizer on vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, squash and like plants will yield large plants and a little fruit. Try to stay with fertilizers with an equal or lower nitrogen (1st number) than phosphate (2nd number) and potash (3rd number). On leaf bearing crops like lettuce, kale and spinach high nitrogen will produce lots of leaves. Onions can also be included in this category. The preceding doesn’t mean that nitrogen is the only nutrition that is needed. Crop yields will always be better when plants have the proper fertilizer properly applied.
